Omar’s World of Comics is a comic book store, established by Omar Masood, a young man with Down Syndrome, and his family in January 2018. The store serves as a vocational training site for students from the LABBB Special Education program, which Omar graduated from, and operates four days a week. The staff at Omar’s World of Comics consists entirely of individuals with special needs, providing them with employment opportunities and a sense of purpose.
The store offers a wide selection of comics, games, graphic novels, and trading cards, and hosts regular events such as Pokemon TCG and VGC League, Friday Night Magic, and other gaming tournaments. It also features an upstairs event space for demo games and local board game playtesting events. Omar’s World of Comics has expanded to a two-floor space, enhancing the fun and learning experiences for the kids and staff involved.
Omar is actively involved in the store’s operations, pricing, and organizing merchandise, and is known for his positivity. The store also includes a cafe and arcade and plans to open Omar’s Bistro in the future, to hire more people with disabilities and teach them cooking skills for greater independence.
The store’s policies, especially for events like Magic: The Gathering, emphasize a fun, fair, and respectful environment, with specific rules in place to ensure the smooth operation of events and adherence to the store’s values.
